Our Painting Process

Start with the Best Finish! Our painting processes and quality materials; along with over 30 years of experience painting flexible composite parts; gives an unbeatable finish . The use of automotive grade basecoat colors and flexible 2K Urathane Clearcoat will make your next project standout from the endless supply of black rods.

Custom Rod Builders are very particular about every component of their builds. It is very important to give them a product that wont effect the action of the blank or add substantial weight to their builds. My process does not have any measurable effect on the deflection/ action of the rod and only adds about .07 oz to the entire blank, one dime weighs .08 oz.  "Based on a 7' inshore blank"

Perhaps the biggest advantage is giving your customers the choice of color. Whether trying to match a collegiate color, boat color or just looking for that perfect shade of pink. We offer to custom paint the color you want, not just what we have on the shelf.

How to Place an Order

I do my best to try and make the order process easy and painless. The fact is I offer a very Custom Service and it requires communication between myself and the customer. I am a Custom Painter, not a Supplier of Blanks and Components. My offer of painting "ANY BLANK ANY COLOR" may sound impossible and too expensive but here's how it works.

  • I offer free pickup service from Mudhole, Get Bit, and American Tackle. I can pickup your order and avoid extra shipping charges. The supplier will still handle the shipping so if your order qualifies for free shipping they will still ship your order for free.
  • I work well with the suppliers, not for the suppliers, so you will pay them as usual for your parts order and I will send you a PayPal Invoice for the paint work after I pickup your parts.
  • You can also send me your parts or have your supplier drop ship to me. In this case you will be responsible for the shipping charges both ways.
  • In any case, communication is key. I want to make sure I paint the colors you want. I need to know how I am getting your parts and where. or through messenger on my @backbonecustomrod  Facebook page.

About Us

We are a family who loves to fish. I started rod building in 2013. I am an active member of the Custom Rod Builders Guild and a contributing author for their Rod Crafters Journal. I am also a member of the American Tackle Pro Staff.

I have been honored to have some of my builds on the cover of the Rod Crafters Journal, on a few Rod Builders Calendars, and for winning two Peoples Choice awards at Rod Builder gatherings.

I am very active in the rod building community. I live a short distance from American Tackle, Mudhole, and Get Bit. I pickup parts from each of these suppliers almost every Friday. I also attend the International Custom Rod Builders Expo (ICRBE) in North Carolina and ICAST in Orlando every year.

I am also active on Facebook @backbonecustomrod and Instagram backbone_custom_rods These places are going to contain my most up to date photos.

I have a lot going on just like most Rod Builders. I work a real job (just like most Rod Builders) along with my paint service.  So sometimes you will have to leave me message and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
